Height Challenges in Motion Capture for Deus Ex: Human Revolution
During the production of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, voice actor Elias Toufexis faced an unexpected obstacle when he expressed interest in performing motion capture for the game’s protagonist, Adam Jensen. Despite his eagerness to take on both voice and physical portrayal, Toufexis was deemed too short for the role. Standing at 5’11”, he fell two inches short of Jensen’s 6’1″ stature, a difference that proved to be significant for the game’s developers.

The Split Performance in Human Revolution
In Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the roles of voice acting and motion capture were distinctly separated, leading to a split performance for the character of Adam Jensen. Elias Toufexis, who lent his voice to Jensen, was not given the opportunity to also provide the character’s physical performance due to the height discrepancy. This division was a source of frustration for Toufexis, who felt that the decision negatively impacted the game’s authenticity.
Toufexis shared that the cinematic team had likely already chosen their preferred actor for the motion capture role, and he was only auditioned as a formality. The resulting performance, according to Toufexis, suffered from choices he wouldn’t have made, leading him to feel disconnected from the final portrayal of Jensen. This dissonance was particularly evident in scenes where he believed his vocal delivery would have differed had he been aware of the physical performance.

Technological Advances in Performance Capture
Technological advancements have significantly improved the process of performance capture, allowing for a more seamless integration of voice, facial expressions, and body movements. This progress is exemplified by games like Baldur’s Gate 3, which utilized full performance capture to create a more immersive and realistic character experience.
Toufexis’s Full Performance in Mankind Divided
By the time Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was in development, the height difference that had previously hindered Elias Toufexis from performing motion capture was no longer an issue. Toufexis was able to fully embody Adam Jensen, providing both voice and motion capture for the character. He takes pride in the unified performance, which he believes greatly enhanced the authenticity and impact of Jensen’s character.
Specific scenes and downloadable content (DLC) from Mankind Divided showcase Toufexis’s comprehensive portrayal. He highlights the opening of the System Rift DLC as some of his favorite work, where his subtle expressions and gestures were captured in detail. The A Criminal Past DLC also features moments that Toufexis is particularly proud of, including a smile and walk away sequence that has become popular among fans.
