The team behind Terraria is setting their sights high for 2023, with ambitions to make it the ‘year of Terraria crossplay’. After the substantial 2022 update titled Labor of Love, they are not resting on their laurels and are already working on another update for this year.
Crossplay Development Underway
One of the most anticipated features by the Terraria community is the ability to play seamlessly across PC, consoles, and mobile platforms. A recent “state of the game” post on Terraria’s Steam page suggests that this dream is inching closer to reality. The developers at Re-Logic have shared that they have begun the new year by updating the core engine and software libraries as a foundational step towards enabling crossplay.

Technical Challenges and Community Solutions
Implementing crossplay for Terraria is a complex task, considering the need to integrate with the network services of Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms like iOS and Android. Despite these challenges, the community has already taken steps towards this goal. A mod exists that allows for crossplay on Terraria servers by modifying network packets to be compatible with different game versions.
Platform | Compatibility Status |

Looking Ahead
Re-Logic’s business head, Ted Murphy, previously expressed excitement about tackling crossplay, describing it as an “exciting hill to climb.” As the year progresses, the community and the developers alike are hopeful that Re-Logic will reach the summit of enabling crossplay for Terraria.
